Project Description

The Hollies

Contemporary Design with Natural Materials // Salcombe, Devon

timber and stone clad modern house by salcombe architects andrew lethbridge associates

The Hollies is a contemporary new home set within the conservation area of Salcombe.  The building is a clean, simple, flat roof timber clad box sat on a natural stone plinth where it grows out of the sloping site. Behind the parapet walls the roof is finished in a natural sedum blanket.  The accommodation is reversed with the living spaces on the upper level with direct access from the raised parking area.  The open plan living and kitchen spaces maximise the compact floor plan, and allows views down to the estuary below.  The lower floor, which is dug into the sloping site, comprises 2 bedrooms, bathrooms and utility / plant spaces.  Traditional, natural cladding materials compliment the contemporary form and fenestration. Vertical cedar cladding planks will weather naturally as the building ages, and the local stone plinth adds a complimentary colour pallet and texture.  Large window openings punctuate the elevations with slim aluminium frames.
