Our clients appointed us as their architects to design and oversee the construction of their new veterinary hospital
Selworthy Vets were looking for architects to design their new veterinary hospital on the outskirts of Kingsbridge. The practice wanted to move out of their existing facility in the town to grow their business and become more accessible for their clients; particularly with the stable facilities. The site of the new hospital is located just outside of Kingsbridge on the road to Totnes, and the project included the conversion of an existing structure along with the construction of a new stable block.
ALA were initially appointed to secure planning approval, before progressing with detailed design alongside PCA Consulting Engineers. The detailed design stage included the production of a building regulations package and written specifications for pricing. The new hospital was constructed by converting the existing portal frame building on the site and finished externally in rough sawn timber cladding and low pitch metal roof for an agricultural aesthetic. The timber cladding runs past the widnow openings in a ‘hit and miss’ design, so that the openings do not form a prominant feature within the elevation. Silding casements allow the windows to be opened for ventilation behind the timber screens.
The hospital includes dedicated consulting rooms, a dental suite, preparation areas and operating theatres. The spaces are interconnected and were arranged to flow seamlessly together from the kennels through the preparation areas and into the operating theatre. The spaces are also laid out to minimise potentially stressful contact between different species; particularly cats and dogs. The building includes a centralised gas distribution system, which allows larger canisters to be used and changed over without having to install an individual system in each room. Hoses connect directly into wall-mounted outlets and each room is connected to a low gas warning system.
ALA were retained for the on-site phase, to oversee the construction and provide design and technical support to Main Contractors Lilburn & Elliott Construction. Contract Administration and project management services were provided by Quantity Surveyors Mendax. We can provide Contract Administration services ourselves, however on larger projects and commerical builds, clients will often elect to seperate out the architectural and contractural/financial services.
