Selworthy Vets were looking for architects to design their new veterinary hospital on the outskirts of Kingsbridge. The practice wanted to move out of their existing facility in the town to grow their business and become more accessible for their clients. The site of the new hospital is located just outside of Kingsbridge on the main road to Totnes and the project included the conversion of an existing agricultural structure along with the construction of a new stable block.
ALA were initially appointed to secure planning approval, before producing a detailed design package alongside PCA Consulting Engineers. The detailed design stage included the production of a building regulations drawing package alongside a schedule of work and specification for pricing. The new veterinary hospital was constructed by converting the existing portal frame building on the site, and finishing the structure externally in rough sawn timber cladding and low pitch metal roof for an agricultural aesthetic. The timber cladding runs past the window openings in a ‘hit and miss’ design so that the openings do not form a prominent feature within the elevation. Sliding casements allow the windows to be opened for ventilation behind the timber screens.
The new veterinary hospital includes dedicated consulting rooms, a dental suite, preparation areas and operating theatres. The spaces are designed to be interconnected and were arranged to flow seamlessly together from the kennels through the preparation areas and into the operating theatre. The different spaces are also laid out to minimise potentially stressful contact between different patients; particularly cats and dogs. The building includes a modern centralised gas distribution system, with hoses connecting directly into wall-mounted outlets and each room is connected to a low gas warning system.
ALA were retained for the on-site phase of the works, to oversee the construction and provide ongoing design and technical support to Main Contractors Lilburn & Elliott Construction. Contract Administration and project management services were provided by local Quantity Surveyors Mendax. ALA can provide Contract Administration services in house, however on larger projects and commercial builds, clients will often elect to separate out the architectural and contractual/financial services.
