The practice was appointed to design a contemporary new home set within the conservation area of Salcombe in South Devon. Our clients approached the practice to design a modest new dwelling to the rear of an existing property, as well as providing improved parking arrangements off the shared lane. There are a number of specimen trees on the site, and we worked closely with Aspect Tree Consultancy to identify root protection areas and construction exclusion zones.
The building is a clean, simple, flat roof timber-clad box sat on a natural stone plinth where it grows out of the sloping site. Behind the parapet walls the roof is finished in a natural sedum blanket. Sedum roofs look fantastic and help to improve biodiversity and habitat potential for birds and insects on a site. Green roofs also provide natural rainwater attenuation as the roofing system holds water within the soil base layers rather than immediately discharging it all into the surface water drainage system.
The accommodation is reversed with the living spaces on the upper level with direct access from the raised parking area. The open plan living and kitchen spaces maximise the compact floor plan and provide a view down to the estuary below between the existing buildings. The lower floor, which is dug into the sloping site, comprises two bedrooms, bathroom and utility/plant spaces. The two bedrooms enjoy direct access to the private garden, with external steps providing a link to the parking area above.
Traditional, natural cladding materials complement the contemporary form and fenestration. Vertical cedar cladding planks will weather naturally to a subtle silver/grey as the building ages, and the local stone plinth adds a complementary colour pallet and texture to the lower level of the house and the raised parking area. Large window openings punctuate the garden elevation with slim aluminium frames and simple, contemporary fenestration.
