ALA recently secured planning permission for the demolition of an existing building and the construction of a new modern house in Devon, situated in the heart of the South Hams countryside.  The house is located at the bottom of a sloping site, and so the lower ground floor accommodation is dug into the hillside and the upper floor enjoys access out to the garden at the rear.  The lower ground floor plan includes an entrance hall and four bedrooms, whilst the living open plan living accommodation is located on the upper floor to maximise the countryside views with direct access to the terrace and gardens.  Demonstrating that the house would enhance the surrounding landscape character was an important part of the planning submission, so we worked closely with local landscape architects Eden Design who produced a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment.

modern house in Devon with green roof and timber cladding

The contemporary house features flat roofs with a green sedum blanket finish, to help the building blend into the wider landscape, naturally attenuate surface water run off and create habitats for wildlife. The elevations are finished in a mix of painted render and timber cladding boards and powder coated aluminium windows complete the contemporary styling. As the green roof develops and the timber cladding weathers, the house will assimilate itself into the landscape.

We used SketchUp Pro to model the building in 3D, which we find incredibly useful during the design process. As well as allowing us to produce impressive visuals for planning applications, the software offers clients the ability to ‘walk through’ the proposals and gain a deeper understanding of how different design decisions will influence the final building.
