We’re extremely proud to announce that ALA recently secured two awards and a commendation at the 2020 Devon Building Control Awards. Our new veterinary surgery for Selworthy Vets won a Gold Medal in the Best Commercial Project category, and a recently completed pair of semi detached homes in the heart of the South Hams won a Silver Medal in the Best Small Development category. A third project, a recently completed bespoke new family home on the South Devon Coast was Highly Commended in the Best New House category.
The Devon Building Control Awards are run by the Devon Building Control Partnership, and recognise excellence in the technical design and construction of buildings over a wide range of categories. Projects are judged on their design, technical achievement and the quality of workmanship. The judges look for buildings that have gone above and beyond simple building regulations compliance, and have embraced the challenge of difficult sites, complex conversion constraints, excellent thermal performance and CO2 reduction targets.
Winners of the local Devon Building Control Awards then progress onto the regional LABC Building Excellence Awards, where the best projects from across the South West compete for a place on the national finals shortlist.
At ALA we enjoy integrating new technology into our buildings, particularly if it brings sustainability benefits. However we will always start with a ‘fabric first’ approach to energy conservation and CO2 reduction. This means that our priority is to design highly insulated, air tight buildings with a reliable ventilation system to maintain air quality, and we pay particular attention to the correct detailing of ‘junctions’ in the building to reduce heat loss and air leakage. This approach allows us to deliver high performance buildings that maximise the benefits from new technology, rather than relying on it to achieve compliance.
